Question:

I need to include an ISSN or ISBN in my ILL request. Where can I find it?

Our answer:

What is an ISSN or ISBN?

An ISSN is an 8-digit code used to identify newspapers, journals, magazines and periodicals. Providing the ISSN on the ILL form allows us to ensure we acquire the correct edition. It is also necessary to activate the automation/expedited delivery option.

An ISBN is a 13-digit or 10-digit number used to identify books or book chapters. While both formats will work, please enter only one number. Providing the ISBN will increase the efficiency of the ILL process and ensure you get the correct version of your book.

Please enter only the number itself, no dashes.

How do I find an ISSN or ISBN?

Here are a few simple methods for locating an ISSN or ISBN:

  • Google Search: For journals and periodicals use Journal Title + ISSN. For books and book chapters use Book Title + ISBN.
  • Amazon: This is mainly for books. Perform a search for the title, select the book you want and scroll down to the product details. The ISBNs will be listed there. Please only use one, either the 13-digit or 10-digit format.
  • Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory (Journals Only): Enter the journal title to find the ISSN.
